FoodDetectives HQ: A Free Food Scanner for Families
Scan food. Find clues. Make clearer choices.
FoodDetectives HQ is a free, browser-based food scanner and detective-style learning game that helps families better understand food labels.
No app. No account. No membership. No cost.
Note: Product data can be missing or incomplete. FDHQ shows clues, not final answers.
What it does
Food labels can be confusing. Parents and kids see long ingredient lists, nutrition numbers, warning labels, and package claims, but it is not always easy to know what matters.
FoodDetectives HQ helps turn those labels into simple clues. Families can scan a barcode, read the report, compare scores, and talk about what they find.
The goal is not to scare families or tell people what to buy. The goal is to help families ask better questions about food.
Two ways to use it
Quick Scan is the fast scanner. Scan a barcode, read the clues, compare the scores, and see the report.
Game Mode turns scanning into a detective adventure with missions, Case Files, clues, and badges.
This gives families two ways to explore: a simple scanner and a full detective adventure.
What families can see
FoodDetectives HQ helps families notice five main label clue areas:
damaged oils, refined oils, and better oil choices
added sugar, hidden sugar names, and treat clues
high-salt clues in processed snacks and packaged foods
colors, preservatives, sweeteners, and Texas SB25 awareness when applicable
staying-power clues that help food feel more like real fuel
Ingredients and processing clues are still part of the bigger picture. The five clue areas help families compare products and ask better questions.
Two scores. More clues.
Detective Score is the main score used in the game and live scanning experience.
HQ Lab Score is a second lab-style score that looks at the food from another angle.
When the scores are close, the clues are more consistent. When the scores are far apart, that difference becomes a clue: oil, sugar, sodium, additives, or protein-and-fiber.
Case Files
FoodDetectives HQ includes story-driven Case Files where young detectives investigate food through missions, evidence, and clues.
The first Rookie Case Cabinet is complete, with seven Case Files ready to explore. A second cabinet has also begun, adding new food mysteries like soda and cereal clues.
Built with child privacy in mind
FoodDetectives HQ was built with a privacy-first approach.
A kid-friendly food tool should not need to collect personal information from children to be useful.
A free public-interest food project
FoodDetectives HQ is growing as a free public-interest food education project built around clearer food labels, clearer choices, food transparency, and family learning.
FoodDetectives HQ welcomes thoughtful people who may want to help it grow, including parents, educators, food-minded volunteers, community supporters, developers, and child-safety advocates.
